Add a Shadow to Plain Text

Learn how to add a Shadow to Plain Text

Adding a Shadow is a great way to make text stand out when place over top an image, or to add visual interest.

Add a Shadow to Plain Text
Select a Plain Text box.
From the text editing toolbar that appears above the design, select the icon for Text Effects, which looks like the letter A on an angle.

A panel will appear on the left, with the effects of Curve and Shadow.  Select the Shadow tile.

The options to edit the Shadow will appear, which include Offset, Direction, Blur, Opacity, and Color.

Change the color of the Shadow by selecting the square to the right of the word Color.

Change the color of the Shadow through any of the color selection options.

Drag the slider to the left or the right to add more or less of the effect on the other options of the Shadow.

Offset
Offset affects the Shadow's distance from the original text.
An Offset of zero (0) places the shadow directly behind the text, and depending on the other Shadow settings, may result in the Shadow not being seen.
Drag the slider to the right to increase the offset of the Shadow.
The maximum Offset is 40, which is the farthest the Shadow can be from the text.

Direction
Use the slider to the right of Direction to adjust the placement of the Shadow.
Direction works well in conjunction with Offset.

Blur
Blur affects the sharpness of the Shadow.
A Blur of zero (0) will retain the original sharpness of the text, whereas a maximum Blur of 20 makes the text very soft.
Drag the dot on the slider next to Blur to the right to make the text more blurry, or drag the dot on the slider to the left, closer to zero, to retain the sharpness of the Shadow.

The Blur option on a Shadow can be used to achieve a glowing, neon-like text effect.  See this article to learn more!

Opacity
Opacity refers to the Shadow's transparency.
A low Opacity will make the Shadow more see-through, whereas a high Opacity will make the Shadow less see-through.
An Opacity of 100 means the Shadow is totally opaque.
Drag the dot on the Opacity slider to the left to make the Shadow more see-through, or to the right to make the Shadow more opaque.

Adjust all of the Shadow options until the desired text effect has been achieved.
